Ronald Fewell, a native of Madison, Indiana lost his life, in the line of duty, while serving with the Lee County Sheriff's Department near Fort Myers, Florida. Corporal Fewell responded to a domestic violence call where a male suspect had shot his wife and was threating to kill himself. Family members had vacated the suspect's residence before Corporal Fewell's arrival, and based upon erroneous information received he exited his Lee County Patrol Vehicle directly in the line of fire. The suspect fired one round from a shotgun striking Corporal Fewell just below his protective vest; then turned the gun on himself inflicting a wound that was not fatal. The convicted killer is now serving consecutive life sentences in a Florida State Prison.
