Reflection:

Unlike previous sections where PE 248 seemed to move about, somewhat chronologically, through almost sixty years; this part will touch people, items, activities, and even events of importance to the writer, and we hope to the interest of our readers.

It will move from topic to topic and not in any particular order. We have chosen a "declaration" by a well-known personality to open the Page, and the Page concludes when this "declaration" is repeated by another. The ending will be recognizable.

Howard's opener - along with fellow announcers, Don Meredith, Frank Gifford, and Al Michaels ushered many MNF Broadcasts into our home. However, our first introduction to the NFL/AFL came in 1968 when Paul Brown organized the Cincinnati Bengals at Nippert Stadium, not to forget a memorable Baltimore Colts/New York Jets Game, January 12th, 1969, when "Broadway Joe" Namath made his Winning-Promise still remembered today and credited, by many, with solidifying Professional Football in America. It was called Super Bowl III.

All the above put the National Football League on our Family's Sports Agenda, and we remain committed to:

It was late 1944, when an 18-year-old-kid from Osgood, Indiana landed (actually by train) at Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi, and if you have viewed the Movie or DVD titled, Biloxi Blues, starring Mathew Broderick and Christopher Walken, their basic-training story parallels (somewhat) an adventure in this Osgood Person's Life.

For viewers of Neil Simon's Broadway & Movie hit, we notice our time at Keesler was much like "Jerome's" who was actually writer Neil Simon re-living his time at Kessler through the "main character" in the story, and as we compared ourself to Jerome, like Neil Simon, we didn't get a freebie either.

How Did Keesler Field Basic Training Lead To New Orleans?

The Squadron Bulletin Board advertised for Band Instrumentalists who could qualify for the Keesler Field Marching Band, and those meeting standards would be free from all Kitchen Police Details plus have a chance to qualify for a weekend-pass to New Orleans!

A quick telephone call to Osgood - "Send The Trumpet" - Years of practice and Ripley County Band experience were about to be put to the test.

"Sycamore Street Practice"

We made the cut and often played, in the evenings, for the Kids who were rapidly changing to Soldiers - Thanks to the Army and our Drill Sergeant, who was not totally unlike the one in Biloxi Blues.

At Basic Training's conclusion, the Marching Band participated in a special program for the Keesler Field Commanding Officer, and following our Drill-Field Performance the Band Director handing me a week-end pass. It was on the bus and off to New Orleans!

Oh My Gosh!

The bus from Biloxi unloaded its passengers on Canal Street - Not far from New Orleans' French Quarter, and one trip down Rue Bourbon changed our view of the "World" we knew forever.

The Clock Moves Forward To March 1978:

The years between "1948 to 1978" are covered in the first two sections of this writing, and the stage now sets as mentioned in the caption.

Those writings cover a time-frame when plans were made for a special "30th Anniversary Celebration" on Bourbon Street, and the New Orleans Police were called for a French Quarter Hotel recommendation.

Ground Zero:

The Royal Sonesta is a 483 Room, Four-Star Luxury Hotel located at 300 Bourbon Street in the Heart of the French Quarter, and when the Doorman opens the front entrance, you step onto, what we believe to be, the most Famous and Recognizable street in the World - Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

We visited The Quarter on a weekend pass from the Army in 1945 and vowed to return. We have re-visited five times, but here we are in 1978, and before we travel up and down Rue Bourbon, let us call attention to a happening several years ago, near Sonesta.

Earl Meets Blaze:

 In the heart of the French Quarter there is a famous Bourbon Street Strip Club where the Governor of Louisiana fell in love with (Headline) Stripper Blaze Starr, and their story is told in a Movie titled "Blaze" featuring one of our favorite actors, Paul Newman, playing the part of the Governor - Earl Long.

This happened several decades ago, but is worth noting, as we write about experiences in the Big Easy. Check the Movie "Blaze" for history of this time in New Orleans, Louisiana, and we now proceed to walk and enjoy the offerings of Bourbon Street.

"The Street" beckons with history, music, entertainment clubs of all kinds, shops of all kinds, and People! Our pursuit of the aforementioned began at a Bourbon Street location featuring Jazz - Titled the Maison Bourbon.

Inside the Maison Bourbon our person found an entertainer she had listened to many times on "Old 78 Records" when he was a member of the Famous "Ink Spots" and performing their well-known signature song.

After a glass of wine, and a stroll around the French Quarter, our next stop was the famous Court Of Two Sisters Restaurant, located in the 600 Block of (Rue Royale) Royal Street.

We've visited The Court of Two Sisters, several times, and consider it among the French Quarter's excellent dinning venues; along with Antoine's, Brennan's, K-Paul's, Tony Moran's, Arnaud's, Olde Nawlins Cookery, Gumbo Shop, Pat O'Brien's, and Cafe Du Monde. The list is almost endless.

Al Hirt's French Quarter Club

March 17, 1978 Saint Patricks Day, about 10:00PM - We entered Al Hirt's Club on Bourbon Street. Al Hirt entertained the audience with a long list of hits, including Bourbon Street Parade.

Following his performance he talked with the two of us and autographed a program for Rita. Al Hirt made a request that before we exit New Orleans we would visit the "Old Men" at Preservation Hall. We did and met great Jazz Artists like Jim Robinson, who played the Trombone, plus Willie and Percy Humphrey, who played the Trumpet and Clarinet. Al Hirt said they are aging and were impossible to replace.

Leaving Al Hirt's and stepping onto Bourbon Street; the clock had turned to "past" midnight, and it was now March 18th. We had made it to Bourbon Street in New Orleans for our 30th.

Across Bourbon Street from Al Hirt's Club was another Nightspot owned-by and featuring Chris Owens as the headline entertainer. We ventured inside after leaving Al Hirt's Club, and it was quite a show!

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is "One of the Jewels of New Orleans" and makes its home in Preservation Hall, located in the Heart of The French Quarter, on St. Peter Street. The Band travels widely and has played in Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Center, and in Indiana at Clowes Hall and The Warren Arts Center.

We have come to know "Past & Present" Preservation Hall Jazz Bands, enjoying them in several venues. The two Bands familiar to us are presented:

The "Today" Trombone Player is Frank Demond, a former contractor of expensive homes in San Francisco; who left a successful business to move to New Orleans and join the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, where he succeeded Trombonist Jim Robinson. Frank is shown, with his Trombone, on the Album Cover.

Strolling About The French Quarter:

Marie Laveau's VooDoo House is seen in the James Bond Movie "Live And Let Die" and is located at 739 Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. We followed-up by visiting, with a guide, Marie Laveau's Grave in the Tombs at the Quarter's St. Louis Cemetery Number One.

In the photo on the left is the old Supreme Court Building on Royal Street in the middle of the French Quarter, and the photo on the right shows the Mississippi River curving around the French Quarter. The "Big Muddy" is 200 feet deep in this area!

1993 Another "Big Easy" Trip & Visit To K-Paul's Restaurant On Chartres Street:

Paul Prudhomme, a long-time New Orleans Chef, established an up-scale eatery on Chartres Street in the Quarter. While dinning at K-Paul's we noticed an unusual painting, of a Blue Dog, on the room's wall, and making inquiry we learned it was by Local Artist George Rodrigue of his pet dog, Tiffany.

Rodrigue has a studio on Royal Street and "The Blue Dog" is famous, not only in New Orleans but also Nationwide, with celebraties like Tom Brokaw owning a personalized original. Tiffany's history makes for "unusual" reading.

1997 Visit Featured Pat O'Brien's At 718 St. Peter Street:

Recommendation: Visit the Piano Bar, where two Copper-Topped Baby Grand Pianos play requests from the audience. Everything from "Jerry Lee to Jo Ann Castle & Beyond!"

Jackson Square As It Was - 1978 To 1997:

Jackson Square faces the Mississippi River and is bounded by the St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo, and the Presbytere. Inside Jackson Square is, its namesake, a statute of Andrew Jackson the hero of the Battle of New Orleans.

Two bits of New Orleans History - The Louisiana Purchase was signed, November 30, 1803, in the Cabildo, and the St. Louis Cathedral is classified a Minor Basilica by the Catholic Church.

We note the change in basic differences, and hues, in photographic films, as we view the results of cameras recording Jackson Square nearly twenty years apart. For history buffs, the Cabildo is to the left of St. Louis Cathedral.

Visit Jackson Square - Walk To The Near-By Mississippi River Landing:

New Orleans is a City of Tours, and one you will not want to miss is a Jazz Brunch and Tour on the Natchez Steamboat as she travels the Mississippi River along the New Orleans Shoreline.

Steamboat Watchers along the Ohio River will always find the Natchez at Cincinnati's Tall Stacks Gathering when the event is held in the Queen City, usually every two to four years.

Our Favorite "James Bond" Movie Has Scenes In And Around New Orleans:

We'll examine bits & pieces of "Live And Let Die" as the Potpourri Section leaves New Orleans and moves-on to additional areas of note. "Live And Let Die" is an excellent James Bond Movie, starring Roger Moore as Agent OO7, with scenes in the French Quarter plus the Area's Bayous. We will show an interesting link between the Movie and one of our visits to the Big Easy.

In one opening sequence of the Movie, an Agent for James Bond's Organization is standing with a "stranger" at the Corner of Chartres & Durmaine in the French Quarter, observing for criminal activity in a Chartres Street Business.

A funeral passes and the Agent asks the stranger, "Whose Uh Funeral Is It?" - The stranger replies, "It's Yours" and stabs the Agent who is carried away, in a Casket, by followers of a Traditional New Orleans Funeral Band.

Fascination for both the French Quarter and this scene in "Live And Let Die" led to our personal search for the Movie location. We were successful and credit, MGM/UA & Webomatica for the Illustrations in this Item.

NLA/EPI Summary:

Our Professional/Personal Association with Dr. Kobetz began in 1976 at a Hostage Negotiation Training Session in Atlanta, Georgia and continued through eight additional workshops - Plus our attendance at Twelve Nine Lives Annual Retraining Sessions, held in various cities.

Through those years, we studied with two additional favorites, Dr. Irving Goldaber and Dr. Tony Cooper - Both outstanding Social-Scientists in the field of conflict resolution, as is Dr. Kobetz.

We conclude the NLA/EPI Section with two photographs taken at a "Kobetz Dinner" following a Retraining Session (where else?) in our Favorite City - New Orleans:

"Haunting Words" from the Defining American Figure of Country Music, Hank Williams, who became a Country Superstar at age 25 and was Dead at age 29. He was Born in Alabama in 1923 and Died enroute to a Concert in Canton, Ohio January 1, 1953.

This Item is opened by a verse from "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" written by Hank Williams in 1949 that quickly rose to "Number One" on the Billboard Country Music Singles the same year.

There were many Hank Williams writings, from his 200 plus songs, that would reach Country's Top-Twenty Charts and make their way to Number One, before his talent was silenced.

Then -

It was PM January 1, 1953 when "this writer" heard Nelson King of WCKY in Cincinnati, Ohio announce, on King's Radio Program, Hank Williams was dead.

Volumes have been written about the Life and Death of Hank Williams, and his music remains the benchmark of Country Music - Hank is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.

We take a few lines in "Potpourri" to travel back in time to the man who wrote timeless classics like "Your Cheatin' Heart" that became his defining composition and the title of a Movie about his life, with a sound track by his son, whose personal goal is to keep his Father's Memory alive.

But Lately Some Of My Kin Folks Have Disowned A Few Others And Me."
Opening lines of the above "1979 Composition" signaled a major change in the music Bocephus, a name his Father gave him, would pursue, from traditional Opry Style performances to energy events, filling packed venues across the Country. Most opened with, "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" - Setting the tone!

Hank Jr. dominated Country Music in the 1980's with gold, platinum and double platinum albums, plus one certified quadruple platinum album. He entered this world on May 26, 1949, and Hank Jr. was "Born To Boogie!"

Number One - "The Bridge On The River Kwai" Begins With This Individual:

Kenneth J. Alford

Major Fred J. Ricketts, Bandmaster of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was England's John Phillip Sousa, plus a writer of a long list of Military Marches. Under his Pseudonym, Kenneth J. Alford, he penned a musical composition that is perhaps the most recognized piece of music world-wide, and we'll expand on that idea a bit, even showing how it blends into or perhaps opens this Item.

"The Time Machine"

On a golf course at Fort George, Scotland in 1913, an impatient golfer whistled two musical notes at Major Ricketts wanting to play through. Ricketts answered the golfer with the next six notes of what was to become the "Colonel Bogey" March. Under his Pseudonym, Kenneth J. Alford, he wrote the famous tune we call "The River Kwai March" that very night.


"Colonel Bogey" was selected, by Columbia Pictures, for background music of the Academy Award Winning Movie "The Bridge On The River Kwai" and is first heard when British Soldiers, who were Prisoners of the Japanese, whistled the tune as they marched into the Kwai Prison Camp.

Movie goers will note strains of the "Colonel Bogey/River Kwai March" are heard throughout the Movie, carefully blended into its fast changing scenes, even to the very end - Listen!

We recall sitting in the Indiana Governor's Office when Governor Robert Orr was talking about a number of items and mentioned "The Bridge On The River Kwai" was his favorite movie - Guess the Governor and this writer had something in common, and we'll have a bit more to say about "Kwai" before "Potpourri" moves on.

The Movie is based on a true story of the construction of the Bangkok-Rangoon Railway during World War II. The building of the "Bridge On The River Kwai" portrays British Soldiers held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Burma during 1943. After capture they are ordered to build the "River Kwai Bridge" by the Japanese Prison Commander, Colonel Siato, and the resulting ideological clash between Siato and the captured British Colonel, Nicholson, dominates much of the theme.

We conclude this section on "Kwai" with a 1957 photograph of the largest single movie set built, to that date, and this "classic" and winner of Seven Academy Awards should be in all DVD collectons.

Perhaps the most legendary story of Love, War, and Intrigue, plus loaded with Stars such as Humphrey Bogart, when asked his vocation by a German Army Major, he replied: "I'm a Saloon Keeper" -

Indeed - Keeper of "Rick's Cafe American" in Casablanca.

Number Three - The Jolson Story:
"Let Me Sing A Funny Song With Crazy Words That Roll Along,
And If My Song Can Start You Laughing - I'm Happy!"
Those "Twenty-Two Words" provide a glimpse into the entertainment persuasion of Al Jolson,
born (Asa Yoelson) the son of a "Synagogue Cantor" in 1886, who became
a superstar and legendary performer of stage, screen, and radio.

It is also a story about media entertainment at the turn of the Century up to the Korean War
where Jolson performed for America's Troops until his death of a heart attack in 1950.
We find the Movie, and the Life, fascinating!

1927 - Jolson starred in the first talking motion picture - "The Jazz Singer" - His legacy on Broadway and beyond can be found on several "Jolson" Websites. We'll cover some of it here -

Jolson Sings Again

1946 - "The Jolson Story" was released by Columbia Pictures, winning six Academy Award nominations and two Oscars, plus it introduced Jolson to new-generations. It was a remarkable production where Larry Parks is Jolson on the screen, with Al Jolson, himself, providing the vocal soundtrack.

"The Jolson Story" tells the rise of a youngster singing in Vaudeville, then progressing to the world-wide entertainer he would become. "The Jolson Story" was so successful a sequel "Jolson Sings Again" was produced, in 1949, by Columbia Pictures, making Jolson the first and only person to have two film biographies made during his lifetime.

"The Jolson Story" & " Jolson Sings Again" (both) feature scenes where Actor Larry Parks "Pantomimes" Jolson Songs. However, Jolson, himself, was allowed to perform one song - "Swanee" - on a runway, with long camera shots in the first movie. His only appearance, but the "Jolson Voice" is unmistakable in this and all scenes.

from three synchronized 35 mm projectors on a large deeply-curved 146 degree screen.

The blockbuster impact of this production method had a lasting impact upon our entertainment memory, and we note Cinerama's uniqueness led the movie industry to develop various wide-screen systems, including IMAX.

Investor, philanthropist, Seattle native Paul Allen has a fondness for the Cinerama Theater that began in his youth, and when he heard the Cinerama Theater in Seattle would close and possibly become a rock-climbing club, Paul bought it. He now owned the only remaining Super Cinerama Theater in the World, and after a multi-million dollar renovation, Cinerama is alive and well in Seattle. Re-opening date was April 22, 1999.

There have been 24 Bond Productions to date, and it was in Casino Royale, not Dr. No, that James Bond made his first screen appearance. That was on October 21, 1954 when Casino Royale, starring Barry Nelson, was broadcast live on the CBS Mystery Theater. It was filmed on a casino set built at Television City in Hollywood minus the adventure and dazzling locations associated with OO7 Movies.

In addition to the "Travelogue" nature of Bond Films, there were unforgetable stunts and gadgets invented by "Q" as Bond pursued SPECTRE, Goldfinger, and the Russians during the Cold War. After the Berlin Wall came down, Blofeld, Zorin, and other "Bad-Guys" became Bond's Adversaries.

The Bond Girls and Moneypenney, plus two extra-ordinary stunt vehicles used in Bond Movies and shown in the following photographs: The first is Little Nellie a portable Auto-Gyro flown by Sean Connery, fighting enemy copters, and the second vehicle is an American Motors Hornet driven by Roger Moore who makes a 360 degree jump/roll over a stream of water.

Watch the Movies to see these spectacular stunts, as the action obviously can not be shown in this article, and pages could be written about the Aston Martin DB5 and the 1971 Ford Mustang Hatchback used in a "Diamonds Are Forever" car chase.
